Connect Linear
Linear connects in a minute: press Connect Linear, approve read access on Linear's own page, and choose which teams count. Linear keeps exact timestamps, so even past work's flow is measured precisely from the first sync.
Connecting
- On Connections, press Connect Linear on the Linear card.
- Linear shows its consent page. Pick the workspace if you're in more than one, and approve read access. Depending on your workspace's settings, a Linear admin may need to approve it.
- You come back to Connections, and the first sync starts at once. Under Change details, press Choose teams to pick which Linear teams count. With none picked, every team we can see counts, including ones added later.
Truly Shipped only reads. It never creates, edits or comments on anything in Linear. Removing the app in Linear (Settings → Applications) stops everything at once, and the card says so.
How Linear maps
| Linear | Truly Shipped |
|---|---|
| Issue | Work item. A Bug label makes it a bug. |
| Workflow state type | Backlog (triage, backlog, unstarted), in progress (started), done (completed). Canceled counts as discarded, never shipped. |
| Estimate | Points |
| Cycle | Sprint |
| Project | Epic |
| Initiative | Initiative. Its name and status follow Linear; the priority rank and quarter are yours to set. |
Cycle time and reopens come from Linear's own record of when each issue started, finished and changed state, so history is exact, not estimated. An issue moved to another team keeps its history under its new key.
Pull requests and issues
Turn on Linear's GitHub integration (Linear Settings → Integrations → GitHub). The pull
requests it links to an issue count toward that issue, and that link wins over anything else. Without it, a pull
request still links when its branch, title or description names the issue's key, like
maya/eng-123-checkout. Linear's suggested branch names already do.
History and updates
The first sync reads up to two years of history. Linear allows a set number of requests an hour, so a large workspace's first sync can take a few hours: it stops when the hour's allowance runs low and carries on where it left off. Changes after that arrive within 15 minutes, and a nightly sync catches anything missed.
Linear beside Jira or GitHub Issues
One tracker counts. With Jira connected, Jira does. Otherwise Linear does, ahead of GitHub Issues.
